Add natural warmth, comfort and beauty to any kitchen, bathroom, restaurant or workspace. We have 3 different styles of butcher block & wooden countertops available for kitchens & bathrooms Edge Grain Butcher Block Countertops In edge grain countertop construction, the wood strips are arranged side by side , then grafted together using premium quality water-resistant glue, these strips can run the full length of the wood countertop or it can be made with varying lengths of wood (blended). Con's: Edge grain tops, are very good for chopping and food prep, however they will show signs of knife marks and wear over time quicker than end grain tops. Pro's: The main advantage of this type of countertop construction is that it can be made very thick and also very long when compared to face grain/wide plank countertops which are limited to the thickness of the boards used to make it. Usually, this type of construction is in the middle price point of the three options. SHOP End Grain Butcher Block Countertops End grain wood countertops are the most durable and also the most expensive countertops, and are made using the end pieces of the wood, this vertical orientation is what makes end grain butcher blocks so gentle on fine knives. Con's: The most expensive and they require regular oiling, more effort to maintain properly and can look dull faster than any other type of construction. Pro's: However they don't easily show scratches and add a unique feature in the kitchen, they have a beautiful checkerboard pattern and can be made in any thickness and any length. The chef's choice for kitchen surfaces, as they are the easiest on your knives, they keep your knives sharper for longer and act like those self-healing cutting boards that artists use. SHOP Wide Plank Countertops (Face Grain) In face grain countertop construction, wide boards are joined edge to edge, showcasing the wood's natural grain patterns on the surface. This method highlights the unique ovals and swirls inherent in the wood. Con's: Face grain countertops are less suitable for heavy chopping or cutting tasks, as they can show knife marks more readily and may dull blades faster than other grain orientations. Pro's: This construction style offers an elegant and visually appealing surface, making it ideal for areas where aesthetics are prioritized over direct food preparation. However, face grain countertops are limited in thickness, typically up to 44mm, due to the constraints of the board dimensions used. Usually, this type of construction is the cheapest of the three options. SHOP All of our wooden countertop & Butcher Block designs have the option for a sink cutout, stove cutout, power outlet cutouts, built in pot stands, angled corner cut, matched wood backsplash, waterfall ends and a variety of edge details to choose from for the perfect kitchen or bathroom look. - Edge-Grain Wooden Countertops For Kitchens and Bath | Minimaal en Mooi
Shop now for durable and elegant edge grain wooden countertops at Minimaal en Mooi. Perfect for a refined look and lasting strength. Order online! Edge-Grain Wooden Countertops Welcome to our guide on edge-grain wooden countertops—the perfect combination of strength, durability, and timeless linear beauty. 10 Things you need to know before buying Edge grain wooden countertops 01 What is an edge-grain countertop? Edge-grain countertops are made by gluing together thin, narrow strips of wood with the edge of the grain facing upward. This creates a surface that’s more uniform in appearance compared to face-grain but still showcases the natural beauty of the wood. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a balance between durability and aesthetics. 03 How durable is an edge-grain countertop? Edge-grain construction is significantly more durable than face grain. It resists scratches, dents, and wear much better, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like kitchen islands or workstations. You’ll find that this construction holds up well over time, even with regular use. 05 Which wood species are best for edge-grain countertops? Oak, maple, walnut, and cherry are popular choices for edge-grain countertops. Each wood species offers different tones and grain patterns, but the construction technique gives the countertop a more consistent look. For clients who want both beauty and strength, these hardwoods are the best options. 07 What kind of maintenance does an edge-grain countertop require? Edge-grain countertops are lower maintenance than face-grain but still need regular oiling and occasional refinishing. The good news is that this type of countertop is more resistant to scratches and dents, so you won’t need to worry about frequent touch-ups. 09 How does edge-grain affect the appearance of the countertop? Edge grain provides a clean, consistent look, with long, straight grain lines running the length of the countertop. This gives your kitchen a modern, streamlined appearance while still showing off the natural beauty of the wood. If you’re aiming for a contemporary design, edge grain fits right in. 02 Why should I choose edge-grain for my countertop? Edge grain offers a sleek, linear look, which works beautifully in modern and minimalist kitchens. It’s also more durable than face-grain because the wood’s fibers are oriented vertically, making it better suited for heavy use. If you want a countertop that handles daily wear while still looking elegant, edge-grain is the way to go. 04 How do I care for an edge-grain countertop? Like all wood countertops, edge-grain needs regular maintenance, but it’s relatively simple. Regular oiling and sealing will keep it looking its best while protecting the wood from moisture and wear. I always recommend wiping up spills quickly and avoiding direct cutting on the surface to maintain its longevity. 06 Will an edge-grain countertop warp or crack over time? Edge grain is more stable than face grain, making it less likely to warp or crack. That said, like any wooden surface, it still needs to be sealed and maintained, especially in high-moisture areas. If you take care of it properly, you’ll avoid issues like warping or cracking down the line. 08 How does the cost of edge-grain countertops compare? Edge-grain countertops are typically more expensive than face grain but less costly than end grain. You get more durability for the price, making it a great middle-ground option. It’s an investment, but the long-term durability and lower maintenance make it worth the extra cost for many homeowners. 10 Is an edge-grain countertop right for my home? If you want a countertop that’s highly durable, can withstand daily use, and still looks great, edge grain is a fantastic option. It’s perfect for busy kitchens where practicality and aesthetics need to go hand in hand. While it does require maintenance, the payoff is a countertop that will serve you well for years. - Face-Grain Wooden Countertops For Kitchens and Bath | Minimaal en Mooi
Shop now for beautifully crafted face grain wooden countertops at Minimaal en Mooi. Add natural warmth to your home with fast shipping available. Explore options and order online today. Face-Grain Wooden Countertops Welcome to our guide on face-grain wooden countertops—a perfect blend of natural beauty, affordability and practical durability. 10 Things you need to know before buying face grain wooden countertops 01 What exactly is a face-grain countertop? When you choose a face-grain countertop, you're opting for a design where wide wooden planks are joined with the grain facing upward. This highlights the natural beauty and unique patterns of the wood, creating a stunning, organic feel for your kitchen. It’s an excellent option if you're looking for something that feels both rustic and luxurious. 03 How durable are face-grain countertops? While face-grain countertops look stunning, they are slightly less durable than other options, like edge or end grain. This means they might dent or scratch more easily with heavy use. If you're not planning to use the countertop as a chopping board or for intense wear-and-tear, you'll find face grain a beautiful and functional choice. I’d recommend placing cutting boards in high-use areas to prevent any damage. 05 Which wood species work best for face-grain countertops? When it comes to face-grain construction, some woods work particularly well. My top recommendations are oak, walnut, cherry, and maple. Each of these species has unique grain patterns and tones. For example, walnut offers rich, deep colors, while maple provides a lighter, more neutral look. This allows you to customize the countertop’s appearance to your taste. 07 What kind of maintenance does a face-grain countertop require? I always tell my clients that regular maintenance is key to keeping their countertops looking fresh. Face-grain countertops require periodic oiling to prevent drying out and warping. With time, if scratches appear, you can simply sand them down and refinish the surface. It’s a relatively simple upkeep process that will ensure your countertop stays beautiful for years. 09 What kind of visual impact can I expect from a face-grain countertop? Visually, face-grain countertops offer a lot of personality. The wide planks of wood allow the natural grain patterns to take center stage, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in your kitchen. The unique patterns in each plank mean no two countertops are exactly alike, which adds a level of authenticity and character to your space. 02 Why is face-grain construction a good choice for countertops? Face grain is particularly popular for its aesthetic appeal. It brings warmth, depth, and character to any space. If you want a countertop that becomes the focal point of your kitchen, face-grain is an excellent choice because it showcases the distinct grain patterns of wood species like oak, walnut, cherry, and maple. It’s a choice that transforms a kitchen into a visually striking space. 04 How do I keep my face-grain countertop looking its best? Face-grain countertops need a bit of love and care to maintain their beauty. I always advise regular oiling and sealing to protect them from moisture and general wear. The great news is that with proper maintenance, they’ll last a long time, and any scratches or dents that occur can often be sanded down and refinished. 06 Will a face-grain countertop warp or crack over time? This is a common concern. Face-grain countertops can be prone to warping or cracking if they’re not sealed and maintained properly, especially in areas around sinks or where there’s constant exposure to moisture. However, by sealing and oiling the surface regularly, you can prevent this. If moisture is a concern, I’ll help you choose a proper sealant to protect your countertop from damage. 08 How does face-grain compare to other countertop options in terms of cost? Face-grain countertops are generally more affordable than edge or end grain, making them an excellent option for clients who want high-quality wood at a lower price point. You get the aesthetic beauty of natural wood at a price that won’t break the bank, but the trade-off is that it requires a bit more care to stay looking its best. 10 Is a face-grain countertop right for my home? If you’re someone who loves the idea of a beautiful, natural wood countertop and you're willing to invest in regular maintenance, a face-grain countertop can be an excellent choice. It offers a stunning balance of beauty and affordability. While it requires a little more care than other options, the visual appeal and warmth it brings to a kitchen make it worth the effort for many homeowners. This type of construction is the cheapest of the three construction styles. SHOP Edge Grain Wooden Countertops In edge grain wooden countertop construction, the wood strips are arranged side by side , then grafted together using premium quality water-resistant glue, these strips can run the full length of the wood countertop or it can be made with varying lengths of wood (blended). Usually, this type of construction is in the middle price bracket of the three construction styles. SHOP End Grain Wooden Countertops End grain wooden countertops are the most durable and also the most expensive countertops, and are made using the end pieces of the wood, this vertical orientation is what makes end grain butcher blocks so gentle on fine knives. Con's: The most expensive and they require regular oiling, more effort to maintain properly and can look dull faster than any other type of construction. Pro's: They don't easily show scratches and add a unique feature in the kitchen, they have a beautiful checkerboard pattern and can be made in any thickness and any length. The chef's choice for kitchen surfaces , as they are the easiest on your knives, they keep your knives sharper for longer and act like those self-healing cutting boards that artists use. SHOP All of our wooden countertops have the option for a sink cutout, stove cutout, power outlet cutouts, built in pot stands, angled corner cut, matched wood backsplash, waterfall ends and a variety of edge details to choose from for the perfect kitchen or bathroom look. - Steel Reinforcement | Minimaal en Mooi
Explore how steel reinforcement enhances the strength and durability of Minimaal en Mooi’s wooden countertops. Prevent warping, support overhangs, and ensure long-lasting stability with expertly crafted reinforced countertops. Wooden Countertop Steel Reinforcements Ensuring Long-Term Durability of Wooden Countertops with Steel Reinforcements To ensure the long-term durability and stability of your wooden countertops, we recommend embedding a 6mm thick steel bar flush within the underside. This method is particularly effective in preventing bowing, warping, or other deformations that may occur over the years due to environmental changes, weight, or regular use. While this reinforcement technique is beneficial for all wooden countertops, it is especially crucial for kitchen islands, breakfast bars, tables, or desks, where larger surface areas are more susceptible to such issues. Customizing the Number of Steel Bars Based on Countertop Length and Width 1. Countertops up to 1 meter in length: Width up to 60 cm: One steel bar along the length. Width 60 cm to 1.2 meters: Two steel bars along the length, evenly spaced. 2. Countertops between 1 meter and 2 meters in length: Width up to 60 cm: Two steel bars along the length, evenly spaced. Width 60 cm to 1.2 meters: Three steel bars along the length, evenly spaced. 3. Countertops between 2 meters and 3 meters in length: Width up to 60 cm: Three steel bars along the length, evenly spaced. Width 60 cm to 1.2 meters: Four steel bars along the length, evenly spaced. 4. Countertops longer than 3 meters: Width up to 60 cm: Four steel bars along the length, evenly spaced. Width 60 cm to 1.2 meters: Five or more steel bars along the length, depending on the exact length and width, evenly spaced. Advantages of Using Steel Bars for Reinforcement Enhanced Stability: Steel bars provide a rigid framework that helps maintain the flatness and shape of the countertop over time. Longevity: By preventing deformations, the countertop remains functional and aesthetically pleasing for many years. Versatility: This reinforcement method is suitable for various types of wood and finishes, seamlessly integrating with your design. Load Distribution: Steel bars help distribute weight evenly, reducing stress on any single point of the countertop. Installation Considerations for Clients Measurements: Provide accurate measurements of your countertop, including length, width (up to 1.2 meters), and thickness, to ensure the steel bars fit correctly. Placement: Indicate where the countertop will be installed, such as on a kitchen island, breakfast bar, table, or desk, to determine the best placement for the steel bars. Purpose: Specify the intended use of the countertop to help us recommend the appropriate number of steel bars for optimal support. Accessibility: Ensure the underside of the countertop is accessible for installation of the steel bars, with enough clearance to work comfortably. Professional Installation: Consider hiring a professional to install the steel bars to guarantee they are fitted correctly and securely. By following these recommendations, you can significantly enhance the performance and lifespan of your wooden countertops, creating a reliable and visually appealing addition to your kitchen, office, or living space. Wooden Countertop Steel Reinforcements Ensure your wooden countertops stand the test of time with our 6mm steel bar reinforcements. Customizable based on length and width, ensuring stability and durability in any space. High Quality Steel We use high-quality 6mm thick steel bars for reinforcing wooden countertops. These bars provide exceptional strength and durability, ensuring long-term stability and preventing deformations. Our steel is precision-engineered to fit flush within the countertop, seamlessly integrating with the wood and enhancing its longevity and structural integrity. Resists Seasonal Wood Movement Embedding a 6mm thick steel bar within the underside of your wooden countertop helps resist seasonal wood movement by providing rigidity and support. This reinforcement minimizes expansion and contraction due to temperature and humidity changes, maintaining the countertop’s shape and preventing warping or bowing over time. Adds Durability & Strength Embedding 6mm thick steel bars in wooden countertops adds durability and strength by preventing bowing and warping over time. This reinforcement ensures the countertop remains stable and maintains its shape, making it ideal for kitchen islands, breakfast bars, tables, and desks, enhancing both functionality and longevity. Invisible Our 6mm steel bar reinforcements are an invisible solution for wooden countertops. Embedded flush within the underside, they maintain the countertop’s aesthetic appeal while preventing bowing and warping. This hidden support ensures long-term durability and stability without compromising the beautiful appearance of your kitchen islands, breakfast bars, or desks.

- Cosmetic Standards for Wooden Countertops | Minimaal en Mooi
Understand the cosmetic standards at Minimaal en Mooi. Learn how we ensure the highest quality finish, surface texture, and overall appearance for each custom wooden countertop. Before placing an order with us At Minimaal en Mooi Houtwerke, we take great pride in each and every unique piece of solid furniture we sell. Our furniture is handcrafted and professionally finished by our team and built using both new and reclaimed wood with a distinctive look. Given the handmade and hand-finished nature of the products we craft, variations and imperfections in the wood should be expected and celebrated! Just as every tree is unique, so too is every piece of furniture that is handcrafted and hand-finished just for you. Please read through our cosmetic standards below before placing an order with us. NOTE: By placing an order with us, you are agreeing that you understand and agree with the conditions of these cosmetic standards. Our Cosmetic Standards About our Wooden Countertops WOOD & STAIN VARIATIONS Every piece of furniture will have a unique grain pattern and slight color variation as a result of the grain pattern. We cannot guarantee exact stain matches to other pieces we've done in the past. Wood has a mind of its own, and every piece of wood accepts stain differently. We will use the correct stain or paint color that you requested for your order, but there is a strong chance the color will vary slightly from the piece or picture you were thinking of when you placed the order. This is normal. We cannot rework the finishing on your piece to get a perfect match. MATCHING STAIN COLORS We do NOT match stain colors off of photos. The only way we can do any type of custom stain color for you is if you bring us the stain yourself and tell us which type of wood to use. All wood types receive stains differently. Once you bring us the stain and tell us which wood to use, we will do what you've asked, however - we cannot rework staining that did not come out exactly as you had in mind. Why? Because every piece of wood has a unique grain pattern and there will always be slight color variations. The only thing we can guarantee is that there are no guarantees. SANDING & STAIN COLORS The finer finish you would like for your piece to have, the lighter your stain will be. The more that your piece is distressed, the darker your stain will be. Why? Because wood has pores, and as wood is finely sanded, the pores close - allowing less stain into the wood - resulting in a lighter color. The more distressed a piece is, generally it means that the pores of the wood are still open (since it hasn't been finely sanded) and it will accept the stain darker. This is how it works. If you are ordering your finely finished piece based off of a photo of a heavily distressed piece and you want the same stain, please know that the stain is going to look different on your finely finished, non-distressed piece. GENERAL VARIATIONS IN FURNITURE Other characteristics of handcrafted, solid wood furniture include open knots, visible brush strokes, micro-imperfections and textural variations in the durable, hand-brushed finishes, unique distress marks, exposed screws, wood filler marks, joint lines, and distinctive nicks, splits, cracks, and other imperfections. We allow up to approximately 2.5cm of variation across all measurements due to the custom nature of the handcrafted furniture we build. Those who do not appreciate variations and imperfections should not purchase handcrafted furniture. Solid wood may expand and contract due to changes in temperature and humidity. This means that the gaps between the boards of a traditional tabletop may get wider over time and will need to be cleaned. This natural movement enhances the one-of-a-kind beauty of solid wood, handcrafted furniture. It does not affect structural integrity and is not considered defective. For customers that prefer to never have gaps between their tabletop boards, we recommend choosing from our jointed top options, which eliminates cracks and spaces between the boards in the tabletops. Jointed tops expand and contract as a whole. You will still see the beautiful and natural open knots on jointed tabletops. We do not offer machine-manufactured perfection - no two pieces are exactly alike since Minimaal en Mooi Houtwerke furniture is crafted to your order specifications. REGULAR WEAR AND TEAR ON YOUR FURNITURE Your piece is protected to a degree with the three coats of industrial-grade lacquer that we apply to your order. However, your piece will experience micro-scratches that we have no control over. The only way to avoid these is to never use your piece. Most people purchase furniture to be used every day and even on special occasions. Therefore, there is virtually no way to avoid these from happening, unfortunately. If you do not want your seat bottoms scratched or ruined, be careful to either use seat cushions on your chairs on a regular basis and/or please be careful when sitting on your chairs in blue jeans with buttons/zippers and the like. We cannot guarantee that your furniture will not scratch, and these types of scratches are not covered in our Guarantee. We celebrate the true uniqueness of every piece of solid wood furniture that is built and finished by hand in our workshop. It is our hope that you will as well. Wood Variations At Minimaal en Mooi Houtwerke, we offer custom wooden countertops up to 160 cm in width, made from new, high-quality wood. Here are some specific considerations regarding our wooden countertops: Each countertop will exhibit unique grain patterns and color variations, adding to the character and charm of your piece. These variations are due to the natural differences in the wood and are a celebrated feature of our work. We select each wood slab carefully to ensure the highest quality and most beautiful patterns for your countertop. Surface Finishes Our countertops can be finished to your specifications, with a variety of finishes and sheens available. We also offer oil polishes for those who prefer a natural, matte look. Fine Sanding: Creates a smoother surface with closed pores, resulting in a lighter stain and a more polished look. Distressed Finishing: Maintains open pores, allowing the wood to absorb more stain for a darker, richer color and a more rustic appearance. Oil Polishes: Provide a natural finish that enhances the wood's grain and color while offering protection against moisture. MAINTENANCE & DURABILITY While our countertops are coated with multiple layers of protective finish, they are still susceptible to scratches and wear over time. Regular maintenance, such as using cutting boards and avoiding direct contact with hot pots and pans, will help preserve the beauty of your countertop. Micro-scratches are inevitable with daily use and are part of the charm of a well-loved, natural wood surface. Preventative Measures: Use cutting boards, trivets, and avoid prolonged water exposure to maintain the countertop’s appearance and integrity. Cleaning: Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the finish. ACCLIMATIZATION & WARPING Wood is a natural material that reacts to its environment. It is crucial for your wooden countertop to acclimatize to the environment in which it will be installed. This helps to prevent warping and ensures the longevity of the piece. Acclimatization Process: Allow the wood to sit flat in the installation environment for at least 72 hours before installation. Ensure the countertop is open to the air with a few pieces of wood underneath to allow airflow all around. Warping: Even with proper acclimatization, wood may still experience slight warping over time due to changes in temperature and humidity. To minimize this, maintain consistent humidity levels in your home and avoid placing the countertop near heat sources or areas with extreme temperature changes. Warping can be easily addressed by a skilled carpenter using proper installation techniques, as outlined in our comprehensive installation and finishing manuals. Steel Reinforcement Bars: For added stability, we offer the option of installing steel reinforcement bars within the underside of the countertop to help reduce the risk of warping. SMALL SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS Wood is a living material, and as such, each slab has its own set of unique characteristics, including small surface imperfections. These imperfections do not compromise the functionality or durability of the countertop but rather enhance its natural beauty and uniqueness. Knots and Grain Patterns: Small knots and variations in grain are natural and add character to the countertop. We take care to ensure these features do not affect the surface's usability. Natural Cracks: Minor cracks may develop over time as the wood adjusts to its environment. These are typical in solid wood countertops and are not considered defects. They can be filled or left as is, depending on your preference. Sealing and Finishing: We apply multiple layers of food-safe sealant to ensure a hygienic surface, but due to the nature of wood, there may be slight texture variations. Regular re-sealing may be necessary to maintain a smooth and protected surface. Edge Profiles At Minimaal en Mooi Houtwerke, we offer six standard edge profile styles for our countertops, with the option for custom profiles on special order. Our standard edge styles include: Straight Edge Beveled Edge Eased Edge Bullnose Edge Ogee Edge Waterfall Edge Minor Tearout and Edge Profile Accuracy During the process of creating edge profiles, minor tearout may occur, especially when working with natural wood. Tearout refers to small chips or rough spots that can occur along the edges of the wood. At Minimaal en Mooi Houtwerke, we address these areas by carefully sanding and filling them to ensure a smooth and finished appearance. Importance of Accurate Sketches To minimize the risk of improper edging, accurate sketches and specifications supplied to us are crucial. These sketches should clearly outline the desired edge profile style and dimensions. This ensures that our craftsmen can execute the edge profile accurately according to your preferences. We take pride in our attention to detail and craftsmanship, ensuring that each countertop is finished to the highest standards. Sink & Hob Cutouts We take extra care to seal the areas around sink and hob cutouts to ensure durability and resistance to water damage. These areas receive additional layers of finish to help protect against moisture ingress. However, these areas require constant maintenance and should be checked regularly for signs of water damage, heat damage, or wear. Maintenance Tips: Regularly check for any signs of water or heat damage. Apply extra sealant if necessary. Use heat shielding underneath and on the sides of countertops near ovens. LEAD TIMES With your order, you were given a lead time. With over 25+ orders in our queue at any given time, lead times are PURELY ESTIMATES. We have been known to get orders to customers before the estimated lead time given, and there have also been issues that have happened in production that delayed order fulfillment. The lead time that we have given you is our best guess at when you will get your piece. It's better to get it a few weeks later than quoted and it be up to quality standards since you plan to have it for years to come, than it is to get it on time and it fails quality standards. We cannot guarantee a specific delivery date. Please know this if you're placing an order with us in hopes of getting it for a special occasion such as a party, birthday, holiday, etc. We will always do our best to accommodate, but we cannot guarantee anything in terms of delivery date. Please understand this before placing an order with us. INSTALLATION TIPS Proper installation is crucial to prevent water damage and ensure the longevity of your countertop. Silicone Sealing: Use silicone along joins and against walls to prevent water damage. This creates a watertight seal that protects the wood from moisture. Heat Shielding: Place heat shielding underneath and on the sides of countertops near ovens to protect against heat damage. We take great pride in crafting each countertop to meet your specifications, ensuring a unique and beautiful addition to your home. Thank you for choosing Minimaal en Mooi Houtwerke for your custom wooden countertops.
