Shop now at Minimaal en Mooi and explore our premium selection of wood for custom countertops. From Oak to Beechwood, find the perfect material for your project with shipping available. Order online today! About Our Wood At Minimaal en Mooi Houtwerke, we take pride in using authentic wood sourced both locally and globally. With a selection of twenty distinct wood species, we have options to match every style, taste, and budget. We believe in the unparalleled beauty and durability of solid wood, so we never use engineered substitutes. When you choose our products, you’re investing in genuine, high-quality wood that will stand the test of time. The color and grain patterns of wood significantly influence the ambiance of your space. To help you make the best choice, we offer wood and finish samples, allowing you to see and feel the wood in person before making a decision. By comparing multiple options, you can confidently select the perfect wood for your project. Each piece of wood is unique, with variations in color and grain pattern even within the same species. This natural diversity is part of what makes wood so beautiful. We strongly recommend ordering samples to get an accurate sense of our current inventory and envision how your finished piece will look. Understanding the Characteristics of Wood At Minimaal en Mooi Houtwerke, we celebrate the natural beauty and diversity of wood. By understanding these characteristics, you can make informed choices that best suit your style and functional needs. Grain Pattern Each wood species we use has its own distinctive grain pattern, akin to the unique fingerprint of a tree. Some woods feature straight, regular grains, while others exhibit knotty, intricate patterns. Certain species, like Zebrawood, boast dramatic and eye-catching grain patterns that add a unique flair to your space. Shrinking & Expanding Wood is a natural material that responds to changes in humidity. Most wood species will slightly shrink or swell with seasonal changes. To mitigate this, we use high-quality finishes that help maintain the wood's dimensional stability, ensuring your furniture retains its form and beauty throughout the year. Hardness The Janka hardness scale measures the resistance of wood to denting and wear by determining the force required to embed a small metal ball halfway into the wood. Hardness varies among wood species, even within the "hardwoods" category. This characteristic is especially important for surfaces that endure heavy use, such as countertops, or in commercial applications where durability is paramount. Density Each wood species has its own density and weight characteristics. For example, Western Red Cedar is known for its lower density, making it an excellent choice for large doors due to its lighter weight. Understanding the density of wood helps us select the best material for your specific needs, balancing strength and functionality. Uniqueness Every tree is unique, leading to natural variations in color and grain pattern within the same species. This uniqueness ensures that each piece of wood used in our projects is one-of-a-kind, adding an element of individuality and charm to your custom woodworking piece. Face-Grain Wooden Countertops Explained Welcome to our guide on face-grain wooden countertops—a perfect blend of natural beauty, affordability and practical durability. 10 Things you need to know before buying face grain wooden countertops 01 What exactly is a face-grain countertop? When you choose a face-grain countertop, you're opting for a design where wide wooden planks are joined with the grain facing upward. This highlights the natural beauty and unique patterns of the wood, creating a stunning, organic feel for your kitchen. It’s an excellent option if you're looking for something that feels both rustic and luxurious. 03 How durable are face-grain countertops? While face-grain countertops look stunning, they are slightly less durable than other options, like edge or end grain. This means they might dent or scratch more easily with heavy use. If you're not planning to use the countertop as a chopping board or for intense wear-and-tear, you'll find face grain a beautiful and functional choice. I’d recommend placing cutting boards in high-use areas to prevent any damage. 05 Which wood species work best for face-grain countertops? When it comes to face-grain construction, some woods work particularly well. My top recommendations are oak, walnut, cherry, and maple. Each of these species has unique grain patterns and tones. For example, walnut offers rich, deep colors, while maple provides a lighter, more neutral look. This allows you to customize the countertop’s appearance to your taste. 07 What kind of maintenance does a face-grain countertop require? I always tell my clients that regular maintenance is key to keeping their countertops looking fresh. Face-grain countertops require periodic oiling to prevent drying out and warping. With time, if scratches appear, you can simply sand them down and refinish the surface. It’s a relatively simple upkeep process that will ensure your countertop stays beautiful for years. 09 What kind of visual impact can I expect from a face-grain countertop? Visually, face-grain countertops offer a lot of personality. The wide planks of wood allow the natural grain patterns to take center stage, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in your kitchen. The unique patterns in each plank mean no two countertops are exactly alike, which adds a level of authenticity and character to your space. 02 Why is face-grain construction a good choice for countertops? Face grain is particularly popular for its aesthetic appeal. It brings warmth, depth, and character to any space. If you want a countertop that becomes the focal point of your kitchen, face-grain is an excellent choice because it showcases the distinct grain patterns of wood species like oak, walnut, cherry, and maple. It’s a choice that transforms a kitchen into a visually striking space. 04 How do I keep my face-grain countertop looking its best? Face-grain countertops need a bit of love and care to maintain their beauty. I always advise regular oiling and sealing to protect them from moisture and general wear. The great news is that with proper maintenance, they’ll last a long time, and any scratches or dents that occur can often be sanded down and refinished. 06 Will a face-grain countertop warp or crack over time? This is a common concern. Face-grain countertops can be prone to warping or cracking if they’re not sealed and maintained properly, especially in areas around sinks or where there’s constant exposure to moisture. However, by sealing and oiling the surface regularly, you can prevent this. If moisture is a concern, I’ll help you choose a proper sealant to protect your countertop from damage. 08 How does face-grain compare to other countertop options in terms of cost? Face-grain countertops are generally more affordable than edge or end grain, making them an excellent option for clients who want high-quality wood at a lower price point. You get the aesthetic beauty of natural wood at a price that won’t break the bank, but the trade-off is that it requires a bit more care to stay looking its best. 10 Is a face-grain countertop right for my home? If you’re someone who loves the idea of a beautiful, natural wood countertop and you're willing to invest in regular maintenance, a face-grain countertop can be an excellent choice. It offers a stunning balance of beauty and affordability. While it requires a little more care than other options, the visual appeal and warmth it brings to a kitchen make it worth the effort for many homeowners. - Cutting Boards | Minimaal en Mooi
Hardwoods to choose from for your countertops The Best Wooden Countertops for Kitchens & Bathrooms in South Africa Wooden countertops for kitchens and bathrooms handcrafted from premium quality hardwoods made to your exact specifications. Ideal for kitchen counters, islands, bars, and more. We ship all over Africa! Get a quote today! We have 3 different styles of wooden countertops available for kitchens, bathrooms and work surfaces Edge Grain Butcher Block Countertops In edge grain countertop construction, the wood strips are arranged side by side , then grafted together using premium quality water-resistant glue, these strips can run the full length of the wood countertop or it can be made with varying lengths of wood (blended). Con's: Edge grain tops, are very good for chopping and food prep, however they will show signs of knife marks and wear over time quicker than end grain tops. Pro's: The main advantage of this type of countertop construction is that it can be made very thick and also very long when compared to face grain/wide plank countertops which are limited to the thickness of the boards used to make it. Usually, this type of construction is the cheapest of the three options. End Grain Butcher Block Countertops End grain wooden countertops are the most durable and also the most expensive countertops, and are made using the end pieces of the wood, this vertical orientation is what makes end grain butcher blocks so gentle on fine knives. Con's: The most expensive and they require regular oiling, more effort to maintain properly and can look dull faster than any other type of construction. Pro's: However they don't easily show scratches and add a unique feature in the kitchen, they have a beautiful checkerboard pattern and can be made in any thickness and any length. The chef's choice for kitchen surfaces, as they are the easiest on your knives, they keep your knives sharper for longer and act like those self-healing cutting boards that artists use. Wide Plank Countertops (Face Grain) Face grain wooden countertop construction is the most beautiful to look at and is not recommended for chopping or heavy use, it is made using the widest (face) part of a board, showing off the most wood grain and are the most striking of all butcher block countertops. Con's: Not recommended for chopping or cutting, easily shows scratches and dents and the overall dimensions are also limited to the thickness of the planks used, length is not an issue, only the thickness. Pro's: In our opinion it is the most beautiful of all the different construction types, it is also relatively affordable and takes only a little effort to maintain properly. If you love the look of wood face grain often provides more visual interest in the kitchen. All of our wooden countertop & Butcher Block designs have the option for a sink cutout, stove cutout, power outlet cutouts, built in pot stands, angled corner cut, matched wood backsplash, waterfall ends and a variety of edge details to choose from for the perfect kitchen or bathroom look.
